SEO is all about improving your ranking on Google.

The problem is that as people try to beat the system, Google take exception and change the rules, so this is a Moving Feast.

Google have recently (April 2011) announced the "Farmer" (Now Renamed Panda) changes aimed to stopp people buying links on Link Farms. This has fundamentally changed the Rules on promoting links to enhance your ranking.

The current debate is about Algorithms that decide a ranking score based upon the relevance of your site to each particular search, versus a more social approach which looks to match the search to those sites that searchers have said match their criteria or Customer Needs.

 

As we will discuss identifying customer needs requires interaction. For the moment lets concentrate on the Algorithm approach.

Starting with the basics, Google looks at the Home Page of your  Heading 1 on each page. So ensuring that the Text on your homepage and the Heading 1's on the rest of your site match the Products and Services that you are selling and would like your customers to find, is a good place to start.

As you can see, currently the highest ranking words are the big ones CareAbout, Database, Management, Marketing, Step and Website.

These are all quite common words, and as such could get lost in the web.

Here comes Google Ad Words. You can start investigating this by using the Google Adwords Tool

Put in your website, or key words to receive a report on how high the competition is for those words, and their relative global and local usage.
